Chapter 4
The Pigeon Peril and Reggie's Fiery Fury
With Professor Quibble's most questionable invention in tow – a contraption involving a bicycle, a series of pulleys, and what appears to be a rubber chicken – Ellie ventures back into the darkened city. Their journey is immediately fraught with peril of the most absurd kind. A flock of confused, city-dwelling pigeons, disoriented by the lack of streetlights, descend upon them in a feathered frenzy. Worse still, they stumble into the territory of Reginald 'Reggie' Rumble, a street performer whose juggling act, amplified by the eerie silence, becomes a territorial dispute. Reggie, a man whose ego is as fiery as his penchant for fire-breathing, views Ellie and the Professor's mission as a personal affront to his darkened stage. He unleashes his routine, a chaotic blend of flaming torches and indignant shouts, creating a new, and very hot, obstacle.
The contraption, if one could even call it that, lurched precariously on the back of Professor Quibble’s sputtering bicycle. It was a glorious, terrifying testament to the inventor’s peculiar genius. A bicycle, yes, but one festooned with an alarming number of pulleys, an assortment of springs that seemed to have a life of their own, and, most notably, a rather dejected-looking rubber chicken dangling from a strategically placed hook. Ellie, perched precariously on the seat behind the Professor, felt a familiar knot of apprehension and exhilaration tighten in her stomach. This was it. The grand plan. Or, at least, the plan that had emerged after a particularly lengthy session involving diagrams scribbled on overflowing teacups and a surprising amount of fizzy lemonade.
“Are you quite sure about this, Professor?” Ellie whispered, her voice barely audible over the clatter of the contraption and the gentle hiss of the bicycle’s unenthusiastic gears. The city, draped in an unnatural, inky blackness, seemed to hold its breath around them. The usual symphony of honking horns, distant sirens, and the murmur of a million lives lived under electric light had been replaced by an unsettling quiet, punctuated only by the distant, bewildered cooing of unseen pigeons.
Professor Quibble, his wild silver hair a halo in the gloom, adjusted his spectacles with a flourish. “Quite sure, my dear Ellie! This, this is the ‘Ethereal Energy Emitter’! A marvel of kinetic conversion and avian-assisted amplification. The rubber chicken, you see, acts as a… a resonant frequency modulator. Absolutely vital.” He patted the bicycle’s frame with an air of paternal pride.
