The polished mahogany table felt cool beneath my fingertips, a stark contrast to the warmth that had begun to bloom in my chest. It wasn’t the opulent setting that soothed me, though the hushed elegance of Mr. Sterling’s study was certainly a far cry from the worn armchair in my own living room. No, it was the man himself, his gaze steady and, dare I say, kind. He’d invited me back, not for a lecture on financial prudence, but for… conversation. It was a strange, humbling thing to be sought out for one’s thoughts, especially when those thoughts were of little monetary value.

“Arthur,” Mr. Sterling began, his voice a low rumble, “I’ve been thinking about our last meeting. About your… approach.” He steepled his fingers, his eyes crinkling at the corners. “You’re not asking for a handout, are you? Not in the traditional sense.”

I shook my head, a small, wry smile playing on my lips. “No, sir. I’m asking for a miracle, I suppose. Or at least, a chance. A chance for Sarah, and for Emily. A chance for Leo and Noah to have their mothers for as long as possible.” My voice, usually steady, wavered with the unspoken weight of that hope. “And if not a chance at a cure, then a chance for peace. For comfort. For memories.”
