The worn leather of Maya’s sketchbook felt familiar beneath her fingertips, a tactile comfort in the swirling chaos of her thoughts. It was more than just paper and ink; it was a sanctuary, a confidante, a silent testament to the emotions she couldn't articulate, especially not to him. He, Sushant, the boy who seemed to possess the sun in his smile and a melody in his laughter, was the constant subject of her surreptitious glances, the phantom presence that filled the margins of her world.

She’d opened it again tonight, the pages a whisper of what lay beneath the surface of her quiet existence. The first few pages were a blur of hesitant lines, tentative sketches of hands, profiles, the curve of a jaw. These were the early days, when her admiration was a fragile seedling, easily crushed by the weight of her own shyness. Then, the drawings grew bolder, more confident. A full portrait emerged, Sushant in mid-song at the school’s talent show, his eyes closed, lost in the music that poured from him like liquid gold. She’d captured the tilt of his head, the slight furrow of his brow, the way his shirt stretched taut across his chest. It was a study in devotion, a silent offering.

Further in, the pages shifted. They depicted not just him, but the space around him, the way light fell on his hair, the fleeting expressions that crossed his face when he was lost in thought. There were doodles of him laughing with his friends, his arm slung casually around Sameer’s shoulders, a stark contrast to the solitary figure she often drew him as in her more solitary moments. These were the glimpses that fueled her hope, the small kindnesses, the moments when his gaze, by chance, would land on her, and for a fraction of a second, she felt seen, truly seen.
