Chapter 5
The Unspoken Choice
Overwhelmed by the tangled emotions and external pressures, Maya makes a startling decision. She pulls away, leaving Sushant bewildered and questioning everything he thought he knew.
The cafeteria, usually a cacophony of laughter and clattering trays, felt unnervingly hushed to Sushant. He scanned the crowded tables, his gaze snagging on Maya’s familiar spot by the window. The vibrant energy that usually propelled him through the school day felt muted, a dull ache settling in his chest.
His thoughts, a tangled knot of concern and a growing, unfamiliar anxiety, were interrupted by a rough hand on his shoulder. Sameer. His best friend, his confidante, the one person who understood the unspoken language of their shared history. But lately, that understanding felt… strained. A thin veil of something unacknowledged had fallen between them, a consequence of words, or rather, the lack thereof.
