The air in the school corridors, usually buzzing with the predictable cadence of adolescent life, had begun to hum with a different frequency. It was a subtle discord, a murmur beneath the surface that only the keenly observant, or perhaps the deeply involved, could truly discern. Sushant, accustomed to the easy camaraderie and confident stride that marked his popularity, found himself increasingly attuned to these almost imperceptible shifts. He’d always possessed a certain awareness, a leader’s instinct for the pulse of the crowd, but this felt different, more personal, a ripple emanating from the quiet corners where Maya usually resided.
He’d noticed it first in the way Sameer’s gaze sometimes lingered a fraction too long on Maya, a flicker of something possessive that didn't quite align with the casual friendship they shared. Sameer, his best friend since they were scrawny boys building forts in the woods, was a constant in Sushant’s life, a reliable anchor. But lately, the anchor seemed to be dragging, snagged on something unseen. Sushant had brushed it off initially, attributing it to Sameer’s usual boisterous nature, his tendency to claim what he perceived as his, be it a prime spot on the football field or a particular joke that always landed.
Then came the whispers, not from others, but from Sameer himself. It had been after school, the late afternoon sun casting long shadows across the dusty quad. They were supposed to be discussing plans for the upcoming inter-school singing competition, Sushant’s forte, but the conversation had veered, as it often did, into the nebulous territory of girls.
