The morning air, usually alive with the cacophony of school bells and hurried footsteps, felt unnervingly still as Sushant pushed open the heavy wooden doors. A familiar expectation, a quiet hum of anticipation that had become as ingrained as his own heartbeat, guided him towards the usual cluster of tables by the library. He scanned the faces, a casual sweep that always landed, eventually, on a particular spot.

But today, the spot was empty.

It wasn’t just an unoccupied chair. It was a void, a stark, silent testament to a presence that was no longer there. Maya’s usual seat, nestled by the window where the morning sun would paint streaks of gold across her worn sketchbook, was vacant. The faint scent of charcoal and paper, a subtle perfume that had begun to cling to his memory, was absent. A knot, cold and unfamiliar, began to tighten in Sushant’s stomach.
