The cafeteria buzzed with the usual midday cacophony. Laughter, clattering trays, the murmur of a hundred conversations – it was a familiar symphony that usually blended into the background of Sushant’s life. Today, however, each sound seemed amplified, sharp and discordant. He traced the rim of his water glass, his gaze drifting towards Maya’s usual corner table. She sat alone, a book open before her, but her eyes were unfocused, lost in a landscape only she could see. There was a new stillness about her, a deeper withdrawal that felt like a physical barrier. It wasn't just her usual quiet; it was an intentional, almost defiant, solitude.

He knew, with a certainty that chilled him, that something had shifted. The silent understanding they had built, fragile as it was, felt like it was fraying at the edges. Rohan, with his gentle eyes and earnest smile, had always possessed a quiet admiration for Maya, a sentiment Sushant had dismissed as harmless. But now, watching Rohan hesitate before speaking, a knot of unease tightened in Sushant’s stomach. Maya looked up, her expression unreadable, and for a brief moment, it seemed as though a silent conversation passed between them, a language Sushant couldn’t decipher. Rohan gestured, a small, hopeful gesture, and Maya offered a faint nod. Then, Rohan slid into the seat opposite her, and the two of them began to talk, their voices a low hum that reached Sushant like a distant echo.
