Chapter 5
A Town Bathed in Hope
Silas Blackwood, utterly bewildered and humiliated by the tricks the mirror played on him, flees in a huff, vowing revenge but ultimately defeated by Mathew's cleverness. Word of Mathew's brave stand and his ingenious use of the mirror's magic spreads like wildfire through the town. The townsfolk, who had been feeling a bit down and forgotten, are inspired by Mathew's courage and his commitment to using the magic for good. They gather at the farm, not to demand the mirror, but to celebrate Mathew and his companions. Laughter and joy fill the air, a sense of renewed hope and community spirit blossoming as they realize that even the smallest among them can make a big difference, especially with a little bit of magic and a lot of heart.
Silas Blackwood, his slicked-back hair now a disheveled mess and his expensive suit speckled with what looked suspiciously like goat droppings, stumbled backward as if he’d been physically shoved. The mirror, which had moments before shown him a vision of himself as the town’s undisputed ruler, now reflected a rather portly pig wearing a tiny, ill-fitting crown. A snort of pure, unadulterated amusement echoed from Granny Smith, who was casually munching on a dandelion just a few feet away. Barnaby, perched triumphantly on the fence post, let out a series of triumphant crows that sounded remarkably like laughter. Karma, her arms crossed and a smirk playing on her lips, simply pointed at the pig-king.
“You know, Silas,” Mathew said, his voice clear and steady as he stood beside the mirror, the faintest shimmer of magic still clinging to its ornate frame, “this mirror shows your wildest dreams. Maybe yours just aren’t that… grand.”
Blackwood sputtered, his face turning a shade of puce that clashed horribly with his already garish tie. He’d envisioned parades, bowing citizens, and piles of gold. Instead, he got a hog in a tiara. The humiliation was a bitter pill to swallow, far worse than any physical blow. He’d been so sure of his own cleverness, so certain he could bend this peculiar magic to his will. But the mirror, guided by Mathew’s pure intent and a healthy dose of farmyard wit, had turned his own greed against him.
