Chapter 4
The Mirror's Clever Defense
One crisp afternoon, Silas Blackwood makes his move. He confronts Mathew, Karma, Barnaby, and Granny Smith near the edge of the farm, his voice dripping with false charm and veiled threats. He demands the magical mirror, claiming it will be better used in his hands. Mathew, though a little frightened, remembers his Grandma's warning: 'Never use this magic for harm.' He looks at Karma, who nods her encouragement, and then at the mirror. Instead of using its power to fight Silas directly, Mathew uses his wits and the mirror's magic to create a series of comical illusions and distractions. He makes Silas chase a phantom pig, causes the ground to appear to ripple like water, and makes Barnaby's crow sound like an army marching, all to outsmart and disorient Silas without causing him any real injury.
The afternoon sun cast long, lazy shadows across the rolling fields of the farm, painting the world in hues of gold and amber. Mathew, Karma, Barnaby the rooster, and Granny Smith the goat were enjoying a peaceful moment by the old oak tree at the edge of their property. Mathew polished the magical mirror with a soft cloth, its surface shimmering with an inner light. Karma sat beside him, a book of fairy tales open on her lap, though her eyes kept drifting towards her brother and the intriguing mirror. Barnaby preened his feathers nearby, and Granny Smith munched contentedly on a patch of clover, her occasional bleat a soft counterpoint to the gentle breeze rustling through the leaves.
Suddenly, Barnaby’s head shot up, his comb bristling. He let out a sharp, urgent crow, a sound far different from his usual morning announcement. It was a sound of alarm, a warning that prickled the hairs on Mathew’s arms.
“What is it, Barnaby?” Mathew whispered, his hand instinctively tightening around the mirror’s frame.
