The word "stroke" had been uttered by a young doctor with kind eyes and an apologetic mouth, as if the diagnosis itself were an inconvenience he was sorry to deliver. Danguole had nodded, accepting the news the way she had accepted so many things: with a stillness that people mistook for strength.
