The kitchen had grown dim around her, the last of the evening light draining from the room like water from a cupped palm. Danguole did not reach for the lamp. Instead, she pressed her fingers to the bridge of her nose, where the orange-tinted glasses had left two faint impressions, as if the world had been pressing back against her all these years.

It was the summer she turned seventeen that she first understood what it meant to jump without looking. The memory surfaced now not as a photograph, but as a feeling—the dry heat of July pressing through the open window of her grandmother’s flat, the smell of wilting dill from the kitchen garden, the distant clatter of a tram on Kaunas’s old cobbles. She had been sitting on the floor, her back against the radiator, a cracked vinyl record spinning silently on the turntable because the needle had worn down to nothing. Her grandmother was in the next room, humming a song Danguole had never learned the words to.

And then the phone rang.
