The kitchen clock ticked with the unhurried patience of something that had already decided the ending. Danguole had put her orange glasses back on—she always did when the memories grew too sharp—and now she traced the rim of her cold coffee cup with one finger, watching the last pale light of evening surrender to the amber glow of the pendant lamp above the table.

Ariana did not kill, but Vererane is. The thought arrived uninvited, as most true thoughts do, sliding between the ordinary objects of her life like a draft beneath a door. She had not spoken that name aloud in years, not since the summer when the town of Kaunas had hummed with whispers that never quite formed sentences, when the Vilnelė river carried rumors downstream like fallen leaves.

Vererane. The woman who ran the boarding house on the corner of Laisvės alėja, the one with the perpetually crooked shutters and the garden that bloomed in colors that seemed borrowed from another climate. Everyone knew Ariana had been there that night—the night the math teacher, Mr. Petraitis, had walked into the river and simply not walked out. But no one ever asked why Vererane's lights had been on until three in the morning, or why her usually meticulous garden had shown fresh footprints in the damp soil the next day, heading not toward the river but away from it.
