The rain had stopped sometime in the night, leaving the streets of Kaunas slick and gleaming under the pale morning light. Danguole stood at the window of her small apartment, her orange-tinted glasses perched on her nose, watching the cobblestones glisten like wet stones in a riverbed. She had not slept well—not that she ever did anymore—but this morning felt different. There was a pull, a quiet insistence in her chest, like a thread tugging her toward something she had long avoided.

She dressed slowly, deliberately, as if the act of putting on her clothes could delay whatever was waiting for her outside. A grey wool coat, a scarf her mother had knitted years ago, though the color had faded from its original burgundy to a washed-out pink. She caught her reflection in the hallway mirror and paused. Without her glasses, the world softened into watercolors. With them, everything sharpened into focus—too sharp, sometimes, like the edges of a blade.

The bus ride to the city center was uneventful. She sat by the window, watching the familiar streets slide by: the old pharmacy with its faded green sign, the bakery where she used to buy rye bread with her father, the schoolyard where she had first learned what it felt like to be invisible. The bus stopped at the corner of Laisvės alėja, and she stepped off into the cool morning air.
