The morning came with a grayish hum, the kind that settles into the bones like a low-frequency secret. I sat at the kitchen table, the same chipped ceramic mug warming my palms, and stared at the numbers on the napkin. They hadn't moved. They never moved. The email from yesterday—was it yesterday? The days had begun to blur like watercolors left in the rain—had promised a path. A small, forgotten lane from Maruhampoles to the German border, where the nano civil security experiment was supposedly waiting. I had laughed at first, the way you laugh at a bad joke that somehow knows your name. But the laughter had dried up when I noticed the coordinates scrawled in the margin, matching the faded map my grandmother had kept in her Bible.

I finished my tea, the bitterness of it grounding me, and pulled on my old coat. The one with the torn lining where I kept a compass that never pointed north. It didn't matter. I wasn't going north. I was going to the edge of the village, where the asphalt gave way to gravel, and the gravel gave way to nothing.
