Chapter 9
Starry's Curious Paw
Kitten Starry, batting at a stray sequin, nudges a hidden compartment in Mary's workbench, revealing a forgotten sketch that sparks a new, bold idea for Mary's next collection.
Starry, a tiny ball of white fluff with eyes like twin pools of melted chocolate, was having a grand time. A stray sequin, escaped from the never-ending cascade of embellishments that seemed to orbit Mary’s workbench, had caught her attention. It winked and shimmered under the soft glow of the shop lights, a tiny, irresistible star. With a playful chirp, she batted at it, her little paws a blur of motion. The sequin skittered across the smooth, worn surface of the workbench, leading Starry on a merry chase. She pounced, missed, and tumbled in a heap of fuzzy delight, her tail twitching with pure, unadulterated joy.
Her pursuit led her to the edge of the workbench, a place usually off-limits, but the allure of the runaway sequin was too strong. Her tiny paws scrabbled for purchase, and as she stretched, one little paw nudged a slightly raised edge of the wood. It wasn’t just a seam; it was a deliberate line, almost invisible unless you knew where to look. Starry, with the uncanny knack of kittens for discovering the hidden and the forbidden, had found it. A soft click, barely audible above the hum of the city outside, echoed in the quiet shop. A section of the workbench, no bigger than a small book, sprang open.
Mary, who had been sketching in her worn notebook, looked up, her brow furrowed in concentration. The rhythmic tapping of her pencil had stopped, replaced by the faintest of sounds. Snowy, ever the vigilant guardian of Mary’s peace, lifted her head from her nap on the plush velvet armchair, her blue eyes surveying the scene with quiet curiosity. Mickey, usually a whirlwind of happy puppy energy, was snoozing near the doorway, a contented sigh escaping him.
