The air in my small studio, usually alive with the hum of my sewing machine and the rustle of fabric, felt thick with a quiet, almost suffocating tension. The damaged dress, the one destined for the grand finale, sat on its mannequin like a wounded bird, its once-perfect lines now marred by a jagged tear. My heart, which had been soaring with the success of the earlier pieces, plummeted. Doubt, that insidious whisper I always fought to keep at bay, began to echo in the sudden silence.
I sank onto my stool, my gaze fixed on the ruined silk. Snowy, ever my shadow, padded over and nudged my hand with her soft head, her sapphire eyes filled with an understanding that always surprised me. Starry, usually a whirlwind of playful energy, curled up on my lap, her purr a gentle rumble against my chest. Even Mickey, usually bouncing with boundless enthusiasm, lay sprawled at my feet, his soft sighs a testament to the somber mood.
"It's ruined," I murmured, the words tasting like ash. "It's all ruined."
