Chapter 12: The Fractured Alliance

5 min read

The heavy engine of the royal vehicle roared with a steady, low hum as it cut through the darkness, eating up the miles between Hayden Barry and the capital. Inside the rear cabin, a heavy silence hung in the air. Arthur sat with his hand firmly gripping Mary’s, his thumb tracing reassuring circles over her knuckles. Resting soundly across their laps was Aveline, completely fast asleep, entirely oblivious to the political storm her family was driving toward.

Meanwhile, within the high marble walls of the Camelot palace, another storm had already made landfall.

Queen Margaret stood by the grand fireplace in the drawing-room, her fingers white around her teacup. Her meticulous, decades-long plan was completely unraveling. Opposite her stood Isabella, dressed in a sharp, dark travelling gown, her trunk already waiting by the door.

"I am leaving, Margaret," Isabella stated, her voice flat, hollowed out by days of weeping. "I am taking my things, and I am going back home to Eldoria. There is nothing left for me here."

Margaret set her cup down with a sharp click, her eyes narrowing into icy slits. "You will do no such thing, Isabella. You are the crowned Queen of Camelot. Your marriage secures the northern borders. You cannot simply pack your bags like a common servant because your husband throws a childish tantrum."

"A tantrum?" Isabella let out a bitter, mocking laugh. "Arthur loves another woman. He has a child with her. He left this palace, he left this throne, and he left me because he couldn't stand the sight of either of us. I have spent three years trying to build a marriage out of ash, Margaret. I am done. The alliance is over."

"The alliance is over when I say it is over!" Margaret barked, stepping forward, her voice dropping into a venomous hiss. "If you step foot outside those gates, I will ensure Eldoria pays the price. I will label your departure a declaration of hostility. I will ruin your family's standing before the high councils."

Isabella didn't flinch. For the first time in three years, she stood her ground, looking directly into the older woman's terrifying glare. "Threaten me all you want, Mother. My father has three regiments waiting at the border, and he knows exactly what a hollow monster you are. You have no power over me anymore."

Seeing that her words no longer held any weight, a sudden, desperate madness flickered across Margaret's face. The control she had tightly held over Camelot for a generation was slipping through her fingers. She snapped, losing her mind completely as what she wanted was no longer happening.

"Guards!" Margaret roared, her voice echoing off the high ceilings.

The heavy doors burst open, and four royal sentries stepped into the room, their hands resting on the pommels of their swords.

"Seize her," Margaret commanded, pointing a rigid, trembling finger at Isabella. "Take her to the eastern tower chambers. Strip her of her keys and lock the doors. She is to be held inside this palace until I say otherwise. No one enters, and no word leaves."

Isabella gasped, her eyes wide with shock as the guards moved forward, grabbing her arms. "Margaret, you are insane! This is an act of war against my father! Let go of me!"

"Keep her secure!" Margaret yelled over Isabella's protests, her breathing ragged as the guards dragged the young queen away, forcing her out of the drawing room and sealing her hostage within her own home.

By mid-afternoon, the heavy iron gates of the Camelot kingdom groaned open. The royal vehicles rolled slowly into the grand courtyard, flanked by Sir Leon and the handful of loyal knights who had escorted them from the coast. Word had quickly spread through the palace that the King had returned, and a suffocating tension settled over the assembled staff and guards.

The heavy oak doors of the palace flew open, and Queen Margaret marched out onto the grand stone staircase, her eyes blazing with a ready lecture.

But as the rear door of the car swung open, the words died in her throat.

Arthur stepped out first, standing tall, his posture completely rigid. He turned back, offering his hand, and assisted Mary as she climbed out of the vehicle, holding little Aveline tightly in her arms. Mary stood at his side, her chin held high, refusing to look down despite the trembling in her hands.

Margaret stood at the top of the stairs, frozen in absolute shock. Her pale face turned an asymmetrical white as she stared down at the courtyard, unable to believe her own eyes. Arthur hadn't just returned—he had brought the common girl, the ultimate threat to her pristine kingdom, right inside the palace walls.

Arthur looked up at his mother, his exact eyes locking onto hers with a lethal, unyielding glare.
