Arthur found himself standing outside the grand ballroom, the murmur of polite conversation and the distant strains of a waltz seeping through the heavy oak doors. He’d come here, to this annual society gathering, with a heart brimming with hope, a heart that had, until recently, beat solely for Eleanor. Mr. Abernathy, his long-time friend and mentor, had offered a gentle caution earlier that week. “Arthur, my boy,” he’d said, his voice a warm rumble like distant thunder, “attraction is a powerful current, but it can lead even the most sensible ship onto the rocks. Observe the captain, not just the sails.” Arthur had nodded, his mind already picturing Eleanor’s radiant smile, convinced that such a smile could only belong to a soul as pure as the morning dew.

Eleanor’s independent spirit, which he’d initially admired as a sign of strength, had morphed, at times, into a stubborn refusal to entertain any perspective other than her own.
