“She… she told me it was a misunderstanding, Mr. Abernathy,” Arthur began, his voice a low rumble, barely audible above the crackling fire. He traced the rim of his own untouched teacup, the china cool against his fingertips. “About Clarissa’s brooch. She said she merely borrowed it to admire its craftsmanship, and it must have slipped from her grasp near the market. That she searched for hours.”

Mr. Abernathy’s gaze remained steady, a silent invitation for Arthur to continue. He knew his young friend was wrestling with a truth that had become too heavy to bear.
