The silken threads of Arthur’s hopeful vision began to fray, not with a sudden snap, but with a slow, insidious unraveling. Each interaction with Eleanor, once a source of delight, now felt like another tug on a delicate tapestry, threatening to pull it all apart. The vibrant colours he had so eagerly painted onto the canvas of their future were becoming muted, stained by the persistent drizzle of her character.
He sat in Mr. Abernathy’s study, the scent of aged paper and pipe tobacco a comforting balm against the gnawing unease in his chest. Sunlight, softened by the leaded glass windows, cast a warm glow on the worn leather of the armchair. Mr. Abernathy, his silver hair polished by time and wisdom, watched Arthur with kind, knowing eyes.
“You’ve been quiet these past few weeks, Arthur,” Mr. Abernathy began, his voice a low rumble. “More so than usual. The bloom seems to have faded from your cheeks.”
