The air in Sal’s Pizzeria, usually thick with the comforting aroma of baking dough and simmering tomatoes, felt thin and brittle. Sal, his brow furrowed deeper than the grooves on a worn pizza peel, paced the checkered floor. The empty space where the heavy, steel safe had stood was a gaping wound in the heart of his restaurant. Chief Riley, his old high school buddy, stood by the counter, his usual easygoing posture replaced by a tense stillness. He’d arrived an hour ago, his face a mask of professional concern that couldn’t quite hide the familiar glint of their shared history in his eyes.

Sal ran a hand over his thinning hair, the familiar comfort of his pizzeria now feeling alien and violated. “But the recipe, Mike. My Nonna’s recipe. It’s… it’s everything.” His voice cracked on the last word. He saw his grandmother’s smiling face, her hands dusted with flour as she stirred the bubbling pot, the very essence of their family’s legacy locked away in that safe. The thought of it falling into the wrong hands, of its secrets being diluted or twisted, was a physical ache.
