The scent of old paper and something vaguely botanical, like dried herbs long past their prime, clung to Arthur Pumble’s house like a second skin. It was a smell that spoke of forgotten gardens and dusty attics, a stark contrast to the vibrant, garlicky aroma that usually filled Sal Moretti’s world. Chief Mike Riley had called it “Arthur’s Arcane Archives,” and stepping through the creaking front door, Sal understood why. Bookshelves, crammed with volumes of every size and hue, lined every wall, some stacked precariously on the floor, threatening to spill their ancient secrets. Dust motes danced in the slivers of sunlight that managed to pierce the grimy windowpanes, illuminating a landscape of well-worn furniture and curious artifacts.
Arthur himself, a man whose hair seemed to have a life of its own, a wispy halo of silver, emerged from behind a towering stack of what looked like antique cookbooks. He wore a tweed vest over a slightly rumpled linen shirt, and his eyes, magnified by thick spectacles, blinked with a mixture of surprise and keen interest. “Sal! Mike! To what do I owe the pleasure of this… unscheduled visit?” His voice was a dry rustle, like turning brittle pages.
