Brenda Peterson’s bakery, “Sweet Surrender,” sat just two blocks down from Sal’s Pizzeria, a cheerful yellow facade that always seemed a little too bright, a little too forced, especially when Sal’s own red awning glowed warmly across the street. Sal “The Sauce” Moretti adjusted his own apron, a splash of marinara already adorning its pristine white. He could practically feel Brenda’s competitive gaze from across the town square, a silent, simmering rivalry that had simmered for years, much like a good tomato sauce.

Chief Mike Riley, his former high school classmate, ran a hand through his already rumpled hair. “She’s our next stop, Sal. Brenda. She’s got the motive, right? Always trying to one-up you, and word on the street is her business hasn’t been doing so hot lately.”

Sal nodded, his brow furrowed. He liked Brenda well enough, in a distant, professional sort of way. She was a whirlwind of sprinkles and frosting, always impeccably dressed, her blonde hair perfectly coiffed. But beneath the saccharine exterior, Sal sensed a current of ambition that could, he feared, become a dangerous tide. “She’s got the ambition, Mike, no doubt. But the recipe? It’s not exactly something you can whip up in a cupcake tin.”
