The salty tang of the Pacific, usually a comforting balm, seemed to carry a restless whisper through Sea Town that morning. Sal Moretti stood behind the counter of his beloved pizzeria, the scent of baking dough and simmering tomatoes a familiar symphony, yet today it was underscored by a discordant note of unease. The locked safe, the sturdy steel guardian of his family’s legacy, stood open and empty. The golden scroll, the heart and soul of Sal’s Pizzeria, was gone. He ran a hand over his thinning hair, the familiar warmth in his chest replaced by a cold knot of dread.

Chief Mike Riley, his old high school classmate, a man whose pragmatic nature usually kept a firm lid on any hint of drama, stood beside him, his brow furrowed in a way Sal hadn't seen since their ill-fated attempt to sneak into the senior prom disguised as janitors. "Nothing, Sal. No sign of forced entry. The lock wasn't tampered with. It’s like… it just vanished."

Sal sighed, the sound heavy with disappointment. "Vanished? Like a ghost? Mike, this is my Nonna’s recipe. It’s more than just ingredients; it's generations of love, of family. It’s the heart of this place." He gestured around the cozy dining room, the checkered tablecloths, the framed photos of his smiling ancestors. "It's the heart of Sea Town, too, you know it is."
