The late afternoon sun, usually a warm embrace over Sea Town, seemed to cast a slightly paler, more hesitant light as Sal Moretti surveyed the empty space in his safe. The heavy steel door, usually a symbol of security, now felt like a gaping maw, swallowing the heart of his family's legacy. The "Golden Marinara" recipe, a parchment brittle with age and infused with the ghosts of generations of Morettis, was gone. And with it, a piece of Sal’s own soul. He ran a hand over his flour-dusted apron, the familiar comfort of it doing little to soothe the gnawing anxiety in his gut. The hum of the pizza oven, usually a cheerful song of impending deliciousness, sounded hollow, mournful.

Chief Mike Riley stood beside him, his usual pragmatic demeanor tinged with a weariness that Sal recognized all too well. Mike, his high school quarterback rival turned the town’s top cop, carried the weight of Sea Town’s peace on his broad shoulders. Today, that weight felt heavier, compounded by the frantic whispers that had already begun to snake through the seaside community like a rogue vine.

“Anything, Mike?” Sal asked, his voice raspy.
