Chapter 15
The Ingredient's Origin
The unusual spice or ingredient identified earlier is traced to a specific, perhaps unexpected, source. This discovery points Sal and Mike toward a new suspect or motive.
The air in Sal’s Pizzeria, usually thick with the comforting aroma of baking dough and simmering tomatoes, felt thin and brittle. Sal Moretti, his hands dusted with a fine layer of flour that mirrored the worry dusting his brow, stared at the empty space in the back office where the heavy steel safe usually resided. It was gone. Not just the safe, but the recipe. His *Golden Marinara* recipe. The one his Nonna had whispered to his mother, who had whispered it to him, a sacred trust passed down through generations. It wasn't just a recipe; it was the heart of Sal’s, the soul of Sea Town’s favorite pizza.
He ran a hand over his closely cropped salt-and-pepper hair, the familiar rough texture a small comfort against the rising tide of panic. How could someone have taken the entire safe? The office door was locked, the windows barred, and the back alley, usually a quiet haven, had been undisturbed. Chief Mike Riley, his best friend since they were scrappy kids trading baseball cards on the Sea Town pier, stood beside him, his brow furrowed, his usual easygoing demeanor replaced by a grim focus.
“Still no sign of forced entry, Sal,” Mike said, his voice low. He ran a gloved hand along the smooth, unblemished wall where the safe had been. “It’s like it just… walked away.”
