The late afternoon sun, a warm, buttery balm, cast long shadows across the cobblestone streets of Sea Town. Sal Moretti, his apron dusted with a fine layer of flour that seemed to be a permanent fixture, wiped his hands on his hips, a familiar sigh escaping his lips. The scent of baking dough and simmering tomatoes, usually a symphony to his senses, felt muted, tinged with the lingering unease of the past few days. The “Golden Marinara” recipe, the very soul of Sal’s Pizzeria, was still gone. Vanished. Like a whisper on the salty sea breeze.

He’d spent the morning meticulously re-examining the safe, the lock still bearing the faint, almost apologetic scratch marks from whoever had managed to bypass its formidable defenses. Chief Mike Riley, his old high school buddy, had been by earlier, his brow furrowed with a familiar blend of frustration and determination. They’d gone over every inch of the pizzeria, a ritual that had become as routine as Sal kneading dough. Mike, bless his pragmatic heart, was a good cop, thorough and by-the-book. But the book, Sal suspected, didn’t quite cover the peculiar brand of mayhem that seemed to bloom in Sea Town like a particularly tenacious weed.

“Anything, Sal?” Mike had asked, his voice a low rumble that always managed to cut through the ambient noise of the bustling kitchen.
