Chapter 13
Sal's Secret Doubts
Sal grapples with his own insecurities about upholding his family's legacy. He privately questions if he's truly capable of running the pizzeria and solving this mystery.
Sal wiped a bead of sweat from his brow, the scent of simmering tomatoes and basil a familiar, comforting blanket that usually filled him with a quiet pride. But today, the aroma felt heavy, suffocating, a constant reminder of what was missing. The empty space in the small, steel safe behind his counter, where the faded, handwritten card bearing his Nonna’s “Golden Marinara” recipe should have been, seemed to hum with a silent accusation. He’d checked it a dozen times since Chief Riley had left, his heart sinking a little lower with each futile inspection.
He leaned against the cool marble of the counter, the worn surface smooth beneath his palms. Outside, the usual cheerful chatter of Sea Town drifted in, the cry of gulls, the distant rumble of the trolley. He, Sal “The Sauce” Moretti, the man whose life was supposed to be as predictable and satisfying as a perfectly baked pizza.
A sigh escaped him, a sound that felt too big for the small, cozy space of Sal’s Pizzeria. He traced the rim of a flour-dusted mixing bowl, his gaze unfocused. He’d always been the steady hand, the one who knew instinctively how much oregano to add, how long to let the dough rise. He’d absorbed his Nonna’s lessons like a sponge, and his father before her. But this… this was different. This wasn't about the perfect balance of flavors; it was about theft, about betrayal, about a piece of his family’s soul vanishing into thin air.
