A minor act of 'mayhem' occurs – perhaps a batch of cannoli is sabotaged. Is it connected to the recipe theft, or a separate incident designed to distract them?

The morning sun, usually a cheerful splash of gold across Sal’s Pizzeria, felt muted, draped in a thin veil of worry. Sal stood behind the counter, his usual booming greeting catching in his throat as he surveyed the small dining room. The scent of baking dough and simmering tomatoes, normally a comforting embrace, seemed tinged with anxiety. He’d spent a sleepless night replaying the image of the empty safe, the gaping void where his Nonna’s legacy, the secret to his famous “Golden Marinara,” should have been.

His gaze drifted to the display case, where the cannoli, usually plump and glistening with powdered sugar, sat in a disquieting state. A few of them looked… sad. Their delicate shells, normally crisp and golden, seemed a shade too pale, and the creamy ricotta filling, instead of being a pristine white cloud, had a faint, almost imperceptible pinkish hue. It wasn't right. It was a subtle wrongness, like a discordant note in a familiar melody.

“Morning, Sal,” a gruff voice rumbled from the doorway. Mike Riley, Sea Town’s Chief of Police, stepped inside, his uniform crisp, his expression a familiar blend of duty and weary exasperation. He was Sal’s oldest friend, a constant presence in his life since they were scrawny kids trading baseball cards on the pier.
