Sarah watched Emily from the kitchen doorway, the clatter of dishes a familiar, comforting sound in the quiet house. Sunlight, thick with the dust motes dancing in its beams, slanted across the worn linoleum floor, illuminating the small, almost imperceptible tremor in Emily’s hands as she stacked plates. Thirteen years old, and already the weight of the world seemed to settle on her slender shoulders. Sarah’s own hands, rough and calloused from years of work and worse, clenched at her sides. Guilt, a constant, gnawing companion, tightened its grip. Every chipped mug, every faded curtain, every creak of the floorboards was a testament to her absence, a silent accusation.

Emily moved with a quiet efficiency that both impressed and unsettled Sarah. It was the efficiency of someone who had learned to rely on no one, to anticipate needs that had never been met. She rarely spoke, her words few and carefully chosen, like precious jewels doled out with extreme reluctance. Sarah longed for the easy chatter of childhood, for the silly questions and the spontaneous bursts of laughter she’d only ever heard in her dreams. Instead, there was this careful distance, this polite wariness that felt like a fragile glass wall between them.

“Did you want some juice, honey?” Sarah asked, her voice softer than she intended, a little too eager.
