The salt spray kissed Anya’s cheeks, a familiar, bracing caress that always felt like coming home, even though her true home now resided within the canvases stacked in her small Halifax studio. The Atlantic wind whipped strands of dark hair around her face as she walked along the waterfront, the rhythmic clang of buoys and the distant cry of gulls a comforting symphony. It had been six months since she’d seen him, six months of late-night video calls and whispered promises across time zones. Six months since Liam had boarded that plane, leaving behind a wake of lingering warmth and the faint scent of his sandalwood cologne.

Anya paused, her gaze drifting to a particularly striking abstract piece in a small gallery window. It was bold, vibrant, a riot of colours that seemed to capture the very essence of a storm at sea. She’d seen it weeks ago, a fleeting glimpse that had lodged itself in her mind, a whisper of something she couldn’t quite articulate. It reminded her, in a strange way, of Liam. His own art, so different from hers – all sharp lines and controlled energy – had always possessed a similar, untamed spark. She wondered if he was still painting, if his hands still moved with that same confident, almost reckless abandon.

Her phone buzzed, a bright, cheerful melody that always made her heart leap. Liam. Her fingers trembled slightly as she answered, a smile already blooming on her lips. “Hey you.”
