The air in the small village of Little Puddleton hummed with a different kind of quiet than Anya was used to. It wasn’t the hushed stillness of a library, but a gentle, murmuring presence, like the rustle of ancient leaves. Lily, her new friend whose bright eyes seemed to hold the sunshine of this very English countryside, had promised an adventure. And now, standing before a charming, slightly crooked cottage draped in climbing roses, Anya felt a flutter of anticipation that was both exciting and a little bit scary.
“This is it!” Lily announced, her voice a clear chime. “Mr. Abernathy. He knows *everything* about everyone who has ever lived here, and probably a few who haven’t!”
Anya smoothed down her skirt, her heart thumping a nervous rhythm against her ribs. She clutched the worn photograph her grandmother Elena had given her – a sepia-toned image of a woman with kind eyes and a stern bun, her great-great-aunt Agnes, or so Elena believed. Would Mr. Abernathy know of Agnes? Would he see a flicker of recognition for Anya’s own family in his eyes?
