Anya, however, felt like a lone, silent note in this lively orchestra. Clutching her grandmother’s worn shopping list, she scanned the stalls, her heart thumping a nervous rhythm against her ribs. Every transaction, every shouted exchange, felt like a riddle she couldn't quite solve. Even the simple act of buying a loaf of bread seemed to require a secret decoder ring.
“Excuse me,” she began, her voice barely a whisper, approaching a kindly-faced woman arranging plump, red apples. “Can I… um… have… one?” She pointed to a particularly shiny apple, her cheeks flushing a deep crimson.
