She shares a meal with distant cousins. Their warmth and acceptance, the simple act of sharing food and stories, begin to mend the feeling of incompleteness she once felt.
The scent of roasting lamb, mingled with the sweet, earthy aroma of roasted root vegetables, hung heavy and comforting in the air. Elara’s breath caught in her throat, not from the richness of the food, but from the sheer, overwhelming warmth of the room. It pulsed from the crackling hearth, from the beaming faces gathered around the laden oak table, and most profoundly, from the gentle gaze of Cousin Thomas, who had insisted, with an almost boyish glee, that this meal be the true welcome into their lives.
She sat between Thomas and a woman with kind eyes and silver threaded through her auburn hair, whose name was Eleanor. Eleanor’s hand, soft and warm, had rested on Elara’s for a moment when they were first introduced, a silent promise of kinship. Now, as the clatter of cutlery and the murmur of conversation filled the space, Elara felt a loosening in her chest, a tension she hadn’t realized she’d been carrying begin to dissolve.
“More potatoes, dear?” Eleanor’s voice was a low, melodic hum, like the gentle rippling of a stream. She held out a silver serving dish, piled high with golden, fluffy mounds.
