The scent of dried lavender and old paper clung to Aunt Anya’s small cottage, a comforting embrace that always settled Elara’s restless heart. Sunlight, filtered through lace curtains, painted dancing patterns on the worn wooden floorboards, illuminating dust motes that seemed to hold secrets of their own. Elara sat opposite her aunt, a teacup warming her hands, the steam curling upwards like a whispered question. The weight of her English discovery, the thrill and the fear, had been a knot in her stomach for days, a melody played too softly to be fully heard.

“Aš vis dar galvoju apie tą nuotrauką, teta,” Elara began, her voice a hesitant murmur, the Lithuanian words feeling both familiar and strangely inadequate for the foreign concept blooming within her. “Ir tą laišką. Kaip mes galime turėti anglų kilmės? Aš niekada nieko nežinojau.” She looked at Aunt Anya, her eyes searching for answers in the gentle lines etched around her aunt’s kind gaze.

Aunt Anya’s smile was a soft bloom, tinged with a familiar melancholy that Elara had always associated with her aunt’s tales of faraway relatives and lost times. “O, mano brangioji Elara,” she replied, her voice like the rustle of old silk. “The world is a much larger place than we often imagine. And sometimes, the most beautiful flowers bloom in unexpected soil.” She reached across the small table, her fingers, delicate as dried leaves, brushing Elara’s. “Your grandmother, my mother, she carried whispers of England in her heart. Fragments, like sea glass smoothed by time.”
