The ancient manor stood like a sentinel against the bruised twilight sky, its stone walls whispering tales of centuries past. Ivy, like emerald lace, clung to its weathered facade, each leaf a tiny ear listening to the wind’s secrets. Elara, her heart a hummingbird’s flutter, stepped onto the gravel path, the sound of her footsteps a hushed confession in the profound quiet. This was it, the place Aunt Anya had spoken of in hushed tones, the ancestral heart of the English branch of her family. It felt less like a house and more like a sleeping giant, breathing softly with the rhythm of forgotten lives.

The heavy oak door creaked open before she even reached it, revealing a woman with eyes the colour of a summer sky after rain and a smile that held the warmth of a hearth fire. “Elara, my dear,” she said, her voice a melody of soft vowels, “we’ve been expecting you.” This was Eleanor, her mother’s distant cousin, a woman whose face was a map of gentle smiles and thoughtful lines. Beside her stood a man with a shock of silver hair and a twinkle in his eyes, his handshake firm and welcoming. “And I am Arthur,” he announced, his voice resonating with a jovial warmth. “Welcome, truly welcome, to Blackwood Manor.”

Inside, the air was thick with the scent of old paper, beeswax, and something indefinably floral, like pressed roses from a forgotten garden. Sunlight, filtered through stained-glass windows, painted kaleidoscopic patterns on the polished wooden floors. Portraits of stern-faced ancestors lined the walls, their painted eyes seeming to follow Elara’s every move, a silent, watchful jury. She felt a peculiar sense of déjà vu, as if she had walked these halls in a dream, her young feet tracing the same paths in slumber.
