The air in Thomas’s study was thick with the scent of old paper and beeswax, a perfume that clung to the very bones of the ancient house. Sunlight, fractured by the leaded panes of the window, painted shifting patterns on the oak-paneled walls, illuminating motes of dust dancing in the stillness. Elara sat opposite Thomas, her heart a hummingbird trapped in her chest, its wings beating a frantic rhythm against her ribs. He had spoken of treasures, of whispers from generations past, and now, with a slow, deliberate movement, he reached for a velvet-lined box resting on his mahogany desk.

Inside, nestled on a bed of faded silk, lay a locket. It was not ostentatious, no glittering diamonds or polished gold, but fashioned from a burnished silver, intricately etched with a swirling pattern that seemed to mimic the very tendrils of Elara’s own yearning. A tiny clasp, worn smooth by the touch of countless fingers, held it shut.

"This," Thomas began, his voice hushed with reverence, "belonged to your great-great-grandmother, Eleanor. She was my grandmother’s sister, you see. A woman of quiet strength, they say, with eyes that held the wisdom of the stars." He paused, his gaze drifting to the window as if seeing Eleanor herself in the dappled light. "She was the one who first spoke of a branch of our family that had journeyed far, to a land of forests and amber lakes. A land called Lithuania."
