The air in the ancient pub, The Whispering Willow, hung thick with the scent of woodsmoke and something far older – the lingering aroma of secrets. Amelia felt it settle around her like a second skin, a comfortable weight after days of chasing shadows. She clutched the worn leather-bound journal, its pages filled with her ancestor’s elegant, looping script, and the final, most baffling riddle. It had led her here, to this very establishment, to a woman named Mrs. Gable, whose eyes, the colour of faded forget-me-nots, seemed to hold the wisdom of generations.

“So, you’re the girl,” Mrs. Gable said, her voice a low murmur, like the rustle of dry leaves. She hadn’t even asked Amelia’s name. Amelia nodded, a knot of anticipation tightening in her chest. She’d been told by the baker, a man with flour perpetually dusting his eyebrows, that Mrs. Gable was the keeper of Willow Creek’s memories, the one who knew all the stories, the true ones.

“The locket,” Amelia began, her voice a little shaky. “It spoke of a ‘hidden bloom,’ a ‘river’s song.’ And then, this journal…” She opened it to the last, smudged page. “It says, ‘Where the guardian weeps, and the sun forgets its face, there lies the truth, the heart of our grace.’”
