Chapter 6
Unraveling the Legend
Following the trail of clues, Amelia uncovers a hidden family secret deeply intertwined with a local legend. The revelation is unexpected and changes her perspective.
The scent of damp earth and ancient stone filled Amelia’s nostrils as she traced the faded lines of the map. Willow Creek’s village green, depicted with charmingly inaccurate detail, seemed to pulse with a life of its own beneath her fingertips. The riddles, each a tiny, intricate puzzle box, had led her here, to the foot of the old stone bridge that arched over the murmuring Willow River. Amelia felt a familiar flutter of anticipation in her chest, a sensation that had become her constant companion since finding the locket. It was a mix of excitement and a prickle of apprehension, like standing on the edge of a precipice, unsure of what lay below.
A shadow fell over her, and Amelia jumped, clutching the locket tighter. An elderly woman, her face a roadmap of wrinkles and her eyes the colour of faded denim, stood beside her, leaning on a cane carved from dark, polished wood. She wore a thick, hand-knitted cardigan despite the mild weather.
