The morning mist clung to Willow Creek like a shy veil, softening the edges of the ancient stone cottages and painting the cobblestone lanes in muted shades of grey. Amelia, clutching the worn leather-bound journal her grandmother had pressed into her hands, felt a familiar tingle of anticipation. The journal, filled with the elegant, looping script of her ancestor, was her only guide now. The cryptic message that had beckoned her across the sea had led her here, to this quiet corner of England, and the peculiar postcard with its single, enigmatic sentence: "The beginning is often found where the end is forgotten."

She’d spent the previous evening poring over the journal in the cozy, slightly musty room at The Whispering Willow inn. The pages spoke of a woman named Eleanor, her ancestor, who had lived in Willow Creek generations ago. Eleanor’s words were a tapestry of observations, philosophical musings, and what Amelia suspected were carefully veiled clues. It was on one of the later pages, tucked between descriptions of moonlit gardens and discussions of forgotten constellations, that Amelia found the first true riddle.

“’Where the stone weeps but sheds no tear, and time’s silent chime you must hear,’” she murmured, tracing the faded ink with her fingertip. “What could that mean?”
