The air in Willow Creek, usually so crisp and alive with the scent of damp earth and blooming roses, felt different to Amelia. It was a farewell scent, tinged with the bittersweet perfume of memories she’d only just begun to make. Her small suitcase, packed with a newfound lightness, sat by the door of the cozy cottage, a silent testament to her impending departure. She looked out the window, the familiar thatched roofs and winding lanes bathed in the soft, golden light of a late afternoon sun. It was a picture she knew would be etched into her mind, a postcard of a place that had, in the span of a few short weeks, become a second home.

Mrs. Higgins, her landlady and a woman whose kindness had been as steady and comforting as the village clock tower’s chime, bustled into the room, a tray laden with steaming mugs of tea and a plate of freshly baked scones. Her smile was warm, but Amelia detected a flicker of melancholy in her eyes.

“Oh, Amelia, my dear,” Mrs. Higgins said, her voice soft. “It feels too soon for you to be leaving us. Willow Creek won’t be quite the same without your bright spirit flitting about.”
