Chapter 2: The Circus of Sparks and Static

Ochita wanders the gritty Earth city until she finds a circus, the only place that seems alive. Inside, she recognizes JEST3R and ERR0R in disguise as performers. After the show, she hides in the bathroom to overthink, only to be found by JEST3R. She explains her banishment and quest, and JEST3R offers her a place to train, find Ikari, and take revenge—but ends on a cliffhanger when a sudden alarm blares.

The city swallowed me whole. Every street looked the same—gray concrete, blinking signs in languages I couldn't read, and people who moved like they were running from something. My wind-thread clothes drew stares, so I pulled a tattered blanket from a trash bin and wrapped it around myself. It smelled like old rain and regret, but it helped me blend in.

I walked for what felt like hours, my ribs aching with every step. The aether here was thin, a distant whisper I could barely grasp. I tried to summon a breeze to ease the pain, but all I got was a faint tickle on my skin. Useless.

Then I saw it. A splash of color in the gray—a massive tent striped in red and gold, with flags flapping in the polluted wind. A banner read: "THE GRAND CELESTIAL CIRCUS! ONE NIGHT ONLY!" Lanterns flickered around the entrance, and a small crowd was filing in. Music spilled out, tinny and bright.

A circus. On Earth. In this dreary city. It was the only thing that looked even remotely magical. Maybe the Guardians had sent a sign. Or maybe I was just desperate for a distraction. Either way, I slipped through the crowd and ducked inside.

The tent was enormous, filled with rows of wooden benches circling a central ring. The air smelled of popcorn, sweat, and something sweet I couldn't name. A spotlight hit the ring, and a figure in a glittering top hat stepped forward.

"Ladies and gentlemen! Welcome to the show where reality bends and dreams take flight!"

The ringmaster had a voice like polished brass. He swept his arm, and two more figures bounded into the ring. One was tall and lanky, dressed in a patchwork jester suit, bells jingling at every movement. The other was shorter, stockier, wearing a straight-faced mime costume with a single tear painted under one eye. They moved in perfect sync, juggling flaming torches and tumbling across the sawdust.

My breath caught. Something about them felt… familiar. Not their faces—those were painted and exaggerated. But the way they moved. The jester's chaotic grace, the mime's deliberate stillness. I had seen those patterns before, in the ancient holograms of the High Tech City's guardians.

JEST3R and ERR0R.

They were here. In disguise. Performing in a circus on Earth.

I stayed glued to my seat through the rest of the show. JEST3R told terrible puns that made the crowd groan, while ERR0R performed a silent act where he made a bouquet of flowers appear and disappear with just a flick of his wrist. At one point, JEST3R pulled a child from the audience and made her laugh until she cried. It was warm, silly, and utterly ridiculous.

When the final bow came and the tent emptied, I lingered near the back. The performers vanished behind a curtain. My heart pounded. Should I approach them? What if I was wrong? What if they were just ordinary humans with extraordinary talent?

I needed to think. I slipped into the bathroom—a cramped, grimy space with flickering lights and a cracked mirror. I leaned over the sink and stared at my reflection. Dirt streaked my face, and my eyes looked too wide, too desperate.

"You're a mess, Ochita," I muttered. "Half Seraphina, full disaster."

I splashed water on my face. The cold helped. I thought about Ikari—her warm hand slipping from mine, the terror in her eyes as we fell. Was she okay? Was she hurt? The thought made my chest clench.

And then there was Iris. The memory of her cold smile sent a shiver down my spine. I had to get stronger. I had to find the Guardians. But how? I was alone, broke, and my magic was barely a flicker.

"Helloo!!~?" A pause "OH! Hello there, sweetie."

I spun around. Standing in the corner of my eye—literally in the corner of my vision, as if she had materialized from the shadows—was JEST3R. No costume now. She wore a simple hoodie and jeans, her face bare, but her eyes were still that electric, playful gray. She leaned against the wall with her 4 arms crossed, a grin spreading across her lips.

"How did you—" I started.

"Door's over there, kid! You were so deep in thought you didn't hear it open." She gestured with her chin. "Also, you've got terrible stealth. I spotted you the moment you walked in, ehe~!."

I blinked. "You knew I was here?"

"Pluh-lease! It's obvious, i could hear your whines from a MILE away." She pushed off the wall and walked closer, her steps light. "You're Ochita Raito, right?"

My mouth fell open. "How do you—"

"ERR0R noticed your specific energy." She winked. "Seraphinas aren't exactly hard to sniff out."

Tears pricked at my eyes. I hadn't realized how desperately I needed someone to know I existed. "I need help," I said, my voice cracking. "I need to find Ikari. I need to get strong enough to face Iris. I need—"

"Whoa, slow down!" JEST3R held up a hand. "One thing at a time. You're in luck—ERR0R and I are setting up a temporary base here. The circus is our cover. We've been tracking some nasty energy spikes in the city. Moonshard activity."

"Moonshards?"

"Corrupted magic users! BAD news. But that's a story for later." She tilted her head. "I'm offering you a deal. Stay with us. Train with us. We'll help you find your love-life and figure out how to deal with Iris! In return, you help us with a few... Difficulties."

I swallowed. "First of all, it is not a Love thing! Also... you would really do that?"

"Hey, what's the point of being a guardian if you can't help a kid in trouble?" She grinned. "Besides, I've ALWAYS wanted a sidekick to call my own!"

Before I could answer, a loud alarm blared from somewhere in the tent. Red lights flashed. JEST3R's grin vanished.

"Uh oh. That's the 'ERR0R found something dangerous' alarm." She grabbed my wrist. "Come on, sidekick. Time to earn your keep."

She pulled me out of the bathroom and into a corridor that led to a back room. The door burst open, and ERR0R stood there, his face unreadable, holding a tablet that glowed with a pulsing red dot.

"JEST3R," he said, his voice flat. "We have a problem. The Moonshard signature just spiked. And it's moving toward the city center."

JEST3R looked at me. "Ready for your first night out?"

My heart hammered. "I don't even know how to fight."

"You'll learn." She tossed me a small device that hummed with aether. "That's a kinetic dampener. Push the button, and it'll give you a burst of speed. Don't break it~"

I caught it clumsily. "What about Ikari?"

"One thing at a time," she said. "First, we survive tonight. Then we find your friend!"

And with that, she ran out the back door, ERR0R close behind. I stood frozen for half a second, then took a breath and followed them into the dark, strange streets of Earth—a half-Seraphina with a borrowed gadget and a heart full of fire.

The wind whispered around me. Somewhere out there, Ikari was waiting. And I would not let her down.
