The air in Pastor Elijah’s study was thick with the scent of old paper and unspoken words. Sunlight, filtered through the blinds, cast stripes across his desk, illuminating dust motes dancing in the stillness. He sat there, not reading, not planning, but simply *being*, the weight of the church’s inertia pressing down on his shoulders like a physical presence. The phone on his desk remained silent, a stark contrast to the clamor of questions that echoed only in his own mind. He’d spoken with Deaconess Ruth that morning, a brief exchange about the upcoming communion service. Her smile, as always, had been bright, her words efficient. Yet, beneath the practiced pleasantry, he sensed a subtle, almost imperceptible shift, a flicker in her eyes that he couldn't quite decipher. It was the same with Elder Samuel, his nods of agreement during the elders’ meeting a familiar cadence, a perfunctory affirmation that offered no real connection. And Assistant Pastor John, his youthful exuberation often met with a polite, distant nod from the senior leadership, his eagerness seemingly lost in the vast, silent expanse of their collective disconnect.

They were a choir, singing the same hymns, but each voice was isolated, a solitary note lost in a hollow hall.

Later that week, the youth ministry’s annual outreach event loomed. Assistant Pastor John, a whirlwind of nervous energy, had called a hastily arranged meeting with Deaconess Ruth and Elder Samuel. He’d laid out the plans, his voice a little too loud, his gestures a little too expansive, as if trying to fill the void left by the absence of genuine enthusiasm.
