It was a chaotic tapestry of death: crime scene photos, victim profiles, scribbled notes, and the chillingly sparse, almost artistic, arrangement of red string connecting them all. Amelia Hayes, his assistant, stood beside him, her brow furrowed in concentration, her usual bright energy muted by the grim reality of their quarry.

“Another one, Miles,” she said, her voice barely a whisper, though the words hung heavy in the sterile air of the precinct’s back room. “Eleanor Vance. Found in her apartment, same MO. No forced entry, no struggle. Just… gone.”

Miles grunted, his gaze fixed on the latest photograph. A woman, serene in death, her eyes wide open, staring at a ceiling that offered no answers. The single, almost surgical wound was barely visible, a testament to the killer’s chilling precision. “The Shadow,” he murmured, the name a phantom that had haunted their city for weeks. “Meticulous. Almost… considerate, in its brutality.”
