Miles Corbin, slumped in his chair, ran a weary hand over his stubbled jaw, the rough texture a testament to another sleepless night. The city was a wound, festering under the relentless onslaught of ‘The Shadow,’ and he felt the infection spreading, seeping into his very bones. Across from him, Amelia Hayes, a stark contrast in her neat grey suit and focused intensity, meticulously sorted through a fresh batch of evidence bags. Each bag held fragments of lives brutally extinguished, whispers of a killer who moved like smoke and struck with the precision of a surgeon.

“Anything, Amelia?” Miles’s voice was a low rumble, devoid of hope. He’d seen too much, too many faces staring back from crime scene photos, too many families shattered. The Shadow was a phantom, leaving behind only the gruesome tableau of their work and an unnerving silence where clues should have been.

Amelia didn’t look up, her gaze fixed on a small, tarnished silver locket nestled within a plastic sleeve. “Still sifting, Miles. It’s like trying to find a specific grain of sand on a beach.” She paused, her brow furrowing slightly. “But there’s something… a recurring motif, perhaps. In the victims’ personal effects. Something that doesn’t quite fit the random chaos.”
