The stale air of the precinct clung to Miles like a damp shroud, a familiar scent of desperation and burnt coffee. The near miss with the phantom, ‘The Shadow,’ had left a metallic tang in his mouth, a taste of failure that was all too familiar. Amelia, bless her sharp mind, had pulled them both from the precipice, her quick thinking a stark contrast to the chaos that had erupted in the abandoned warehouse. He watched her now, hunched over a desk piled high with files, her brow furrowed in concentration, a single lamp casting a pool of light on her determined features. She was a beacon in the encroaching gloom, a fact he’d grudgingly come to accept.

“Anything?” he asked, his voice raspy from disuse.

Amelia didn’t look up immediately. She traced a line across a photograph of the latest victim, a young architect named David Chen, his smile frozen in time. “It’s the same, Miles. No forced entry, no signs of struggle until the very end, and the killer… so precise. Like a surgeon with a vendetta.” She finally met his gaze, her eyes, usually so bright, held a flicker of unease. “But I’ve been going over everything again, all the victims. There’s something more than just random targeting. Something personal.”
