Chapter 9
A Glimpse of Home
Luna sees a fleeting vision of her home, a painful reminder of what she's lost. This fuels her determination to find a way back, despite the overwhelming odds and the growing darkness around her.
The vision came without warning, a shimmering tear in the oppressive gloom of the Underworld. Luna, huddled against the damp cavern wall, her breath ragged from the climb, suddenly found herself not in the skeletal landscape of demons and despair, but bathed in the warm, golden light of a late afternoon sun. She saw her backyard, the familiar swing set swaying gently in a breeze that carried the scent of freshly cut grass and honeysuckle. Her mother’s laughter, a melody she thought she’d never hear again, echoed as clearly as if she stood beside her. A pang, sharp and agonizing, shot through her. It was so real, so achingly close, and yet impossibly far. The vision fractured, like a dropped mirror, the bright shards of home scattering into the encroaching shadows, leaving behind only the gnawing emptiness and the cold, hard reality of her imprisonment.
Tears welled, hot and stinging, but Luna refused to let them fall. Not here. Not now. She clenched her small fists, her knuckles white. This wasn't just a dream; it was a promise, a burning ember of hope that had been reignited by that fleeting glimpse. Home. The word became a mantra, a shield against the encroaching despair. She had to find a way back. She *would* find a way back.
Xylo, who had been observing her with his usual impassive gaze from a few paces away, shifted his weight. “A fleeting fancy,” he rasped, his voice like stones grinding together. “The Underworld plays tricks on the mind, little one. Especially on those who cling to what they’ve lost.”
