Chapter 16
The Artifact Secured
With trembling hands, Luna grasps the artifact. A surge of energy flows through her. Grolok roars in fury, but the artifact's power creates a temporary shield, giving them a precious window to escape.
Luna’s fingers, still slick with the residue of Grolok’s foul ichor, brushed against the cool, smooth surface of the Orb. It pulsed faintly beneath her touch, a silent heartbeat in the echoing cavern. A tremor ran through her, not of fear, but of something else entirely – a nascent power, a hum that resonated deep within her bones. The Orb, the artifact Xylo had spoken of in hushed, urgent tones, was finally in her grasp.
A blinding flash of emerald light erupted, momentarily eclipsing the oppressive gloom of Grolok’s domain. The Orb, now cradled securely in Luna’s small hands, flared with an inner luminescence, casting dancing shadows against the cavern walls. It felt warm, impossibly so, like a captured sun. A surge of pure, unadulterated energy coursed through her, a tingling sensation that spread from her fingertips to the very tips of her toes. It felt like being alive, truly alive, for the first time since she had tumbled into this nightmarish realm.
“NO!” Grolok’s roar was a physical force, a wave of pure rage that slammed against Luna and Xylo. The cavern vibrated, the very stone groaning under the demon’s fury. He lunged, his massive, clawed hands reaching for the Orb, his eyes burning with a malevolent fire. But the Orb’s light intensified, forming a shimmering, translucent barrier around Luna. Grolok’s claws met the shield with a deafening clang, sparks flying as his immense strength was momentarily repelled.
