Luna, her small frame trembling, clutched the smooth, cool surface of the artifact. Its ethereal glow, a gentle counterpoint to the oppressive darkness, did little to soothe the gnawing unease in her stomach. Beside her, Xylo’s usual cynical facade had cracked, replaced by a troubled intensity that mirrored the storm brewing in Luna’s own heart. The confrontation with Grolok had been a harrowing dance of wit and near-disaster, and though they had emerged victorious, the victory felt hollow, overshadowed by the unspoken weight of what had transpired.

“You… you knew him,” Luna whispered, her voice barely disturbing the stillness. The words, a simple observation, carried the force of a revelation. She watched Xylo’s shadowed face, searching for confirmation, for an explanation that had been so carefully guarded. His silence was a language she was beginning to understand, a language of evasion and regret.

Xylo finally stirred, his gaze drifting to the artifact nestled in Luna’s hands. It pulsed with a faint light, as if resonating with the turmoil within him. He ran a hand over his scarred cheek, a gesture that spoke of years of hardship and untold stories. “Knew him?” he echoed, his voice rough, like stones grinding together. “Grolok and I… our paths have crossed before. More times than I care to remember.”
