The air on Kalagi had always hummed with a vibrant energy, a symphony of crashing waves, rustling palms, and the cheerful chatter of its people. But on this particular day, a different kind of hum began, a low, guttural growl that seemed to vibrate from the very core of the island. Lumu, standing on the breezy veranda of his modest home, felt it first as a peculiar tremor beneath his feet, a subtle disquiet that set his teeth on edge. He’d always felt connected to Kalagi, to its rhythms and moods, and this felt like a sickness in its soul.

He looked out at the horizon, where the sky, usually a brilliant expanse of azure, was beginning to curdle into an ominous, bruised purple. The sea, normally a playful turquoise, churned with a restless, muddy hue. A sudden, unnatural stillness fell over the island, the usual cacophony of birdsong silenced, the wind holding its breath. It was a stillness that screamed of foreboding, a pregnant pause before the world tore itself apart.

Then, the sky ripped open. Not with rain, but with a raw, primal force. The wind, unleashed from its slumber, became a monstrous entity, a howling banshee that tore at everything in its path. Palm trees, the proud sentinels of Kalagi, bowed and splintered as if made of matchsticks. Roofs, once sturdy havens, were ripped away in great, groaning sheets, scattering like fallen leaves. The sea, no longer content to lap at the shores, surged inland with a terrifying roar, a tidal wave of dark, churning water that swallowed beaches and crept insidiously into the heart of villages.
